Chapter Twelve

Rina moved round the desk to stand in front of Jim. Her lovely dark eyes were bright with tears. Jim hastily pushed his chair back and got to his feet, his face filled with concern.

‘I’m sorry, lassie,’ he said tiredly, ‘but it’s the best I can offer . . .’

‘No. This will never do,’ Rina cried in distress and to Jim’s surprise she threw her arms around him and hugged him fiercely. ‘I would never, never want you to move out of your home. You were born here. This is where you belong. If you would allow me to come to live here with you and Jamie, when I’m his wife of course, then I promise to do my best to care for you as Aunt Maggie has always done. I am not as good at cooking yet but she has taught me how to make lots of dishes and I can learn more. Please, please say you will stay and let Jamie and me live here with you?’ Jim felt a wave of profound relief as he looked down into her earnest young face. There was no doubt she meant what she was suggesting. He swallowed hard.

‘I’m sure you and Jamie willna want an old man like me living with you,’ he said gruffly.

‘Of course we shall, if you can put up with us. And you’re not an old man. Jamie told me you have been more like a father to him than his own father and you’ve taught him nearly everything he knows about farming. He would never want you to live anywhere else, I know he wouldn’t.’

‘Well . . . Well, I don’t know what to say,’ but Jim couldn’t help the smile which wiped the weariness from his weathered features. ‘Shall we go and see what the others have to say?’

Jamie was over the moon when he heard why his Uncle Jim had wanted to see Rina alone, and he agreed emphatically that they would not want him to move out of Bonnybrae for their sake.

‘Oh well, Jim,’ Joe said with a teasing grin, ‘you can always move in with us when they fill the house with children.’ Rina blushed rosily and looked at Jamie but his blue eyes were dancing and he gave her a hug and whispered, ‘I look forward to the opportunity.’

Rina returned to her work at the hospital with a lighter heart on Sunday evening. She wrote to Mr MacQuade but she knew he would have no objection to her using her money to help buy Bonnybrae. He had suggested it himself, knowing how much she loved Jamie. He drove to the hospital to discuss it with her. He was pleased Jim Sinclair was going ahead with buying Bonnybrae.

‘Most of all I’m pleased I was right. He is an honourable man or he wouldn’t insist on including your name on the deeds. Few men regard women as equals, even though they have got the vote now.’

One thing troubled Rina.
